Post operation recovery
Hey guys. I've posted in my log that my appendix has burst last week Tuesday. I came out alive, but I'm in terrible condition. I've weight myself yesterday and weighed 70kg, whereas I weighed 81kg before my op. That is 24lbs in 8days.
Most of it would have been moisture, but I'm still at least 10-15lbs down. My staples will be removed next week and the doctor said I can start training again by that time, but it seems a little soon. I would rather take s week or so more of and recover properly, but will start jogging and walking at that time. Now I want to now, should I change my program, I'm currently on one of IA's beginner routines, or stay the same and what should I expect/do in regards of weight? Kind regards |

I would focus on your conditioning and healing before any barbell work. Just realize that it takes a long time. I remember being put in the hospital for 2 weeks after coming back from Iraq. I woke up with a beard weighing 156 lbs (went to Iraq 192). Just took a long time to recover. I maxed out DC training at 256 lbs. So you can't look at this as anything other than a starting point. Wipe the slate clean. Build up your joint and ligament strength. Get your conditioning back up. Get your diet back on track. Over time you'll be back.
Of course the hardest thing you'll go through isn't the training. It's staying positive and patient. |

I would really encourage you to check with the physician again and clarify the training point to make sure he is okay with Resistance Training as opposed to other types of training. Jogging, swimming, playing basketball and other typical aerobic training activities would not have similar types of intra-abdominal and blood pressure increases which would normally be associated with varying levels of resistance training. This would be the red flag in my mind. The last thing you would want to do is experience some unexpected complications and delay the healing for longer.

When i had my appendix out earlier this year it took me like 4 weeks before I could even stand up straight and walk around comfortably. I had a long incision. Take it really slow. How is your digestive system, have your pain meds given you any trouble? I got really backed up and i could have cleaned myself out a little faster if I focused on fruits and veg while I had the time off.

At this point your body needs to RECOVER. Surgery is trauma and the body is working to heal etc. Diet, rest BUT being "active" will help it all. Baby steps to make sure that when you do lift you truly are ready and not taking a BIG step backwards.
Take the time to work flexibility, cardio/heart health, different types of endurance. |

Although my appendix didnt rupture, I had it removed two summers ago. Like hunter, it was 4 weeks until I could stand up straight, probably 6 weeks until I could wear a seatbelt, and I started working out after 6 weeks with movements that didnt place the core under much stress. Just take it easy man. The injury knocked me out of my junior yuear of football, and possibly college football. A lot of people downplay the amount of time it takes to recover. Jsut take it slow and easy, and remember. ALways listen to your body and never rush into things.

The surgeon removed the staples this morning and thank God it didn't hurt. 2 of the wounds is fine and have healed quite quick, but the third, where the appendix came out and where the drainage pipe where in, looked quite infected.
The doctor said it is normal for the situation and that I should keep the wound clean. He said I should take it easy for 2 weeks and then can start training again. I can walk in the mean time and later on, if my body permits me, start jogging again. Thank you for all the replies guys, I appreciate it. |

for the surgery, on honestly seems like it is a hit or miss. Youre talking about jogging soon, yet me and hunter took 4 weeks to start walking normal again. SOme people resume full contact sports a week later while some are out for months.

I've had other surgery on my stomach before, I had a epigastric hernia back when I was 13 year old. Recovered very quick from that.
I'm going to a clinic today so the can check out my incision. It doesn't look good, the wound doesn't look like it closed up properly and I'm scared of infection. Until my wound isn't fully healed, scab off and normal skin growth, I'm not going anywhere near a gym. |

Okay, went in to see the GP today and she said she's not concerned about the cut, everything should heal fine. I'm very relieved cause I've heard a lot of horror stories about people getting skin transplants as long as two years after the operation because of skin infection.
Hopefully the next time I'm posting I'm back training again. Going to take it slow for another 2 weeks and then decide where I'll start. My weight is constant now on 76kg, in American that is 168lbs. I've dropped from 178lbs so that's not that much and I'm actually quite happy cause I want to fight at 170lbs. Hidden bonus. Thanks again for all the replies, I have some photos of the wounds and drainage pipe if anyone wants to see. |
