Books on meditation?
I have a lot of bad things that have happened in my past that I think are subconsciously preventing me from moving forward in the future. I have no idea how to get rid of this and this is an extremely big issue for me. And so the only thing I can think of to get rid of the barriers, so to speak, in my mind is to learn to have better control or clarity of my mind.
And so I come to the mods here and ask what books are good for meditation techniques and having further control over my mind so that I may move forward. Or hell some of your own, specifically geared towards IA since I know he is an avid practitioner of these, or I have assumed because of his knowledge on these subjects. Thank you all. Edit: It doesn't have to be meditation, that is just what I assumed the basic building block would be. I am not looking for instant results, whatever it may be to address my issues and have control over my brain and not let it control me. Last edited by Snowblind3; 04-30-2010 at 09:18 PM. |

Simple mantra meditation is easiest for most people starting out. After that simply counting breaths is the next easiest method. You don't really need a book for either of these. Just google it. There is a book on Zen meditation in the mind and meditation section, but like all Zen mediation it places a lot of emphasis on body posture which I simply don't think is that important.

Thank you for the quick answer. Another question, is simple meditation enough to be able to have more control over my brain? Or being able to organize my thoughts, I guess seeing the inner me and being able to resolve my conflicts? Sorry if this is too broad for you to answer.

It will if you dedicate yourself to it. It takes most people 4 months to a year to get remotely proficient at it. There are many techniques you can use to help calm your mind, but I would need a LOT more info. If you will wait a few weeks until my book is finalized you are welcome to call me and we can go over this and perhaps I can give you some better advice that way--at the moment I am WAY booked.

Oh wow that would be great. But my initial reasons may sound juvenile to you. If it would be easier for you I could type something up, everything on here is anonymous, for the most part, so it wouldn't bother me. (Not to mention I can express my thoughts much clearer on paper, so to speak, than in voice. Always been that way since I was a kid.) Thank you for being willing to take the time to help me out. It's not life threatening or anything, it's just with me going to college soon I have a lot of "future" stuff going through my mind.

I understand that we are all here trying to better ourselves. Most try and make their bodies better and assume once they are "Buff" their world will be perfect--they are almost always wrong. Everything stems from the mind. You can write it, but we will still need to do a call. Don't bother posting it, just send it to me in a few weeks and remind me about this post. It will only take a few minutes to get a much clearer idea what you should be doing to start out.

Sounds great IA. See you in a few. Until then, should I start practicing the meditation or just wait to talk to you since I am sure a few weeks will hardly do anything.

Start now, some people are naturals at it, for most it takes serious dedication. It can't hurt, and will help with discipline if you will apply it. Don't force yourself. Just start at 5 minutes at a time and work up.

They teach mindfulness meditation which is different to the form taught here in the first Cd's - which as you know is mantra based, but the two are not incompatible and some people start from one and go onto the other, while some use a combination of both. For me, the best book to date that explained the significance of meditation is "Meditation: The First and Last Freedom".
