Shirataki Noodles = 0 Calories?
Anyone try them? They are primarily made of fiber.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirataki_noodles I'm thinking of buying some to add to my keto diet. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with them, and what their opinion on them is. |

I tried them when I was living in Asia. Pretty blend unless you add stuff to them. Not sure if they are as "good" as advertised.

They are nothing like spaghetti noodles if that is what you are after. They are a bit slimy and are basically just a very stiff gel made of fiber. They add substance to soups but are not going to be "filling" the way flour noodles are.

I eat them on occasion. Good for fillers, in things asian noodle dishes etc but almost nutritionally void, which many people will bash but i feel are good in some cases. Especially keto-style diets as you are doing, and myself included. I think they're great, virtually tasteless, wouldnt call them slimy, and in sauces do fine. My only problem with it is the price, its not overly priced, but for a student its not a luxary i can afford too often.

As I understand it, there are two kinds of shirataki noodles. One has tofu added, one doesn't. If your package says 0 calories, yours don't have tofu. Shirataki noodles are almost entirely fibre on their own, hence the super-low calorie count. Shirataki is sold in mainly Asian markets. The "cake" form (non-noodle form, looks like a slab of it instead) is called kon'nyaku in Japanese (I think the Chinese market spelled it cognac or coggnac or some variation of that).

This johnstyras account has to be the best spambot I've seen yet. Every time a food product comes up by name, it posts a relevant paragraph along with a link to a memory sales company in the UK. If you google "johnstyras" you come up with posts several other forums--none weightlifting-related--that all do the same thing.
In short: ban. |
