Deadlifting and straps

I am always amused, yet in a state of disbelief when I see people, especially good strength coaches tell people to not worry if their grip fails when pulling, just keep doing it. You then fail to work your entire body so you can work your grip a bit harder. First try chalk. If that doesn't work, or your gym doesn't allow it:

Use straps for any weight you can't hold. After your sets, take the same weight that you could NOT hold long enough, and just do some static holds with it. Hold it as long as you can for 3-4 sets. ALL A DEADLIFT DOES FOR YOUR GRIP IS STATICALLY CONTRACT YOUR GRIPPING MUSCLES (HAND/FOREARMS). You can do that just by holding a bar. Missing a deadlift because you can't keep your grip is foolish considering that you can replicate EXACTLY what a deadlift does for your grip doing static holds. But do NOT put the straps on until you absolutely have to.

If you are a competitive powerlifter, you have to be able to hold whatever you can pull, but you can truly get in all the grip work you need AFTER you have pulled in straps.

good advice. never thought to do that. so after deads/rack deads, put the same weight in say a shrug type height and just hold it? gonna give that a shot. after being out of the gym for so long (before novemember, almost 2 years) lost a SHIT ton of grip strength. glad i read this.

I "lost" my gyms straps recently to force myself not to use them. Half my grip strength issue is nerve problems but my only way to overcome is to get a stronger grip.

I agree with using straps for heavy sets.

I don't do any specific grip work and I use straps for all my heavy deadlifting sets unless I am testing my max. My grip can hold out fine for a single PR.

Then again I don't deadlift Andy Bolton level weights, so maybe my opinion is worthless.

Yea I agree, I could push myself another 5-6 reps with a certain weight on the deadlift, but my grip gives out way before then. So using straps then taking them off for static holds makes total sense. Going to start doing some holds for sure.

Can't you do that doing static holds or other grip work?

I've been doing a lot of static holds at lockout on deadlift as well as gripper work. The more I can get the better so forcing myself not to use straps on rows pullups ect if I have nothing to rely on. I do have one strap for doing high rep db rows once my grip fails.

It's very importan to me to get my grip as strong as possible. I think I have a shot at coans all time deadlift record in my weight class if I just had a rocksolid grip on the weight.

Just wish I could get nerve issues minimized. Need to start seeing chiro again as that helped before.

beating Ed's record in any weight class would be phenomenal!

I have bad nerve issues that effect grip also. My grip used to be stupid strong.......now it's stupid weak

My nerve issues effect my grip and pushing musculature. My pulling muscles other than grip are not much effected. Recently my right grip has went through a stage where it is weaker than the left. The right has ALWAYS been a LOT stronger than the left. Freaked me out when I first started noticing it, it is slowly getting better.

Halfway is an unknown quantity at this point
hand/wrist nerve entrapment issues are a bitch, hope they get fixed

I used straps for almost 6 years, and the first time I tested my grip with them off I could hold onto 765 without any issues. Which suprised me no end, since it's a lot more than I used to be able to hold back before I used straps
