Body temperature 2 degrees low, consistently

my body temperature is between 96.5-96.9

it's been this way for awhile.

I know it's wrecking my metabolism, because I sure as hell have issues trying to drop bodyfat now (35 years of age, sleep apnea)

My question is, how much of a difference is this making? and what the hell do I tell the doctor so he can figure out WTF is wrong with me?

Keep in mind, this is a military doctor, so they are trained to get me in and out of there in no time flat. I need SPECIFIC information to give him, i.e. I need to "lead the witness", so to speak.

any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Tell them you want your thyroid checked, simple as that. Tell them you have been trying to lose weight to help with PT and its not coming off and your morning body temp is low. They will run standard tests.

NOW, what the real deal is that you have been under maintenence too long and thats why it's low. You don't need a doctor in all reality. What you need is enough over maintenence calories for long enough for thyroid to come back up.

okay, so how the heck do I eat over maintenance without getting fat?

I know, sounds like a very basic question, right?

except that I already do cardio 2x daily on monday, wednesday and friday, and morning times on tuesday, thursday, saturday as well as weights on all 3 days

i recover just fine, not overtraining at all, no weird aches, etc. but the bodyfat is just stuck to me, and the body temp is being retarded.

My guess is that my sleep apnea has something to do with this, but I am using a C-Pap machine (Which has at least brought my blood pressure down to normal levels)

It will stay stuck until you feed yourself. You may gain a few pounds, you may not. Sometimes as people put more food in, metabolism goes up at a rate that keeps weight gain minimal or non-existant. I have actually have had trainees start LOSING weight when their cals went up. But that is not the norm. Expect a bit of fat gain and if you do it correctly it will be very minimal. I get most of the people that come to me with slow metabolisms back up to temp with very little fat gain. Most people get totally stuck when they are where you are. Their metabolism is screwed so they can't lose weight at any fair pace, and they won't eat for fear of getting fat so they continue their viscious circle. If you can't get past the fact that sometimes you have to take a step back to take two forward my condolences--you will remain stuck unless you go the drug route.

thats quite a bit of cardio, and if your on a calorie deficit diet I would end up with a lowered metabolism in the range your reporting.

Have you tried eating over a maintaince for a week?. If not, give it a go and then see if your body temp increases.

okay, so let's talk specifics here

breakfast
1/2 cup oatmeal + scoop protein powder + flaxseed meal (1T) + skim milk

midmorning snack - 1cup cottage cheese, 2T ANPB, plus some veggies

lunch - dead animal, 1/2 pound, plus some veggies

midafternoon snack (prelifting) - whey + skim milk

postworkout - whey + milk

postworkout meal - 1/2 lb dead animal plus veggies

pre-bed snack - ANPB + glass skim milk

does that seem reasonable? I'll also consider cutting back some of the afternoon cardio workouts, but they are low intensity style, and I am not having issues with recovery

Keth,

That is entirely up to YOUR body to decide. I have trainees that have problems eating that much, and I have a lot that would starve to death on that, so the answer is--there is no set answer. To get out of your condition you need a 500-700 calorie excess and to add carbs, at least double, I take that back, triple, if not more the carbs you are eating while trying to get metabolism moving again.

LOW glycemic ones. Ezekeil bread, long grain brown rice, and oatmeal are prime candidates, as are some LOW gylcemic fruit such as berries and apples. Not huge servings, but enough to peg an excess. Start logging and its very frequent to see a 1/2 degree increase in a week-two.
