Question About Starting Strength & SPBR
Hi, after reading some blogs and learning about westside I discovered this site. You guys seem well educated and experienced so I think this is the perfect place to ask.
I'm 6'0 190lbs and 20-23% bf depending on the measure. I'm also pretty weak at my height. Only have a 185 bench and squat, a 200lb deadlift and 115 lb OHP. I've been program hopping for the last year, when I did go to the gym. I realize now that this takes time and dedication and everyone is different. Moreover you have to devote yourself for a full year to actually see significant changes. My goal right now is to drop bodyfat, I'm aiming for 10% but looking at the pics of guys around 12-14 I'd settle for that. I'd also like to get stronger and hold onto any lean body mass I have. Long term goal is to be 190 and hit 300/400/500. My questions are is starting strength a good program to go with initially?I've been reading a lot of negative things about this program but it looks good and am wondering if its one of those things if you can run it, then run it? Only reason I'm thinking about this is due to my squat and bench being same. I am also looking at SPBR but am wondering if this would be a better choice after SS? I like SPBR because everything in it seems to be designed to help the main lifts. so what I'm guessing is which one would be better suited in my situation at the moment? I am aware that fatloss is predominantly a result of diet and I have been keeping track of what I'm eating to find a base level. Gone is the dairy, excess sugar, and junk. Its primarily lean protein, whole grains and good fats. I've also started doing more cardio (more for being fit and in good condition) And this is how I propose to divvy up my week: monday workout 30 mins cardio post weights tuesday 45 mins cardio wednesday workout 30 mins cardio post weights thursday 45 mins cardio friday workout 30 mins cardio post weights sat 45 min run/jog in time this will become hiit sun rest * I workout in the morning and 2-3 times a week will do a beginners yoga class since my posture and flexibility are poor. Cardio is elliptical, bike, stairmaster. I've already started the cardio. Last edited by IronSpirit; 05-30-2012 at 03:27 PM. |

I should mention that I' planning on doing SS with wendlers accessory work, Chins Dips neck work and ghr or pullthrus and bb curls. If I did run SS would this be ok?

Starting Strength all day long IMO. You can run variants of it for a very long time. I know a guy on the board that is doing great running a 5x5, I run bill starr 5x5 often and it always gives great results, every time. Not so with some other setups like westside.
SPBR is good also, but for me was lacking repetition of the main lifts. Squatting mainly, I couldn't get good at it squatting so infrequently. Was probably my single largest lifting mistake leading up to this point. |
