If you are lifting at home and never compete, make it however tall, wide, hard etc you want. As long as you get stronger. If you might compete,it'd be best to use a bench that is sized closely to what you'd see in a meet. 18" high total. 12x48" wide and long. Medium firm foam for most feds, firm for Usapl. Non slip vinyl for most, regular vinyl for usapl. I can sell you an upholstered pad ready to bolt on most benches
