Questions about the bench (equipment)

1) what is a good height? or the standard height. my bench is literally 2 feet off the ground if not more and I love it. it feels much more stable than what you have in average commercial gyms
2) is there any reason to limit the width of the pad as long as your arms don't get in way?
3) is there any function of the pad other than to dig into with your traps? would there be anything wrong with a hard flat surface instead of a pad?

Like it or not, we are the product of a very long process of adaptation to a harsh physical existence, and the past couple centuries of comparative ease and plenty are not enough time to change our genome. We humans are at our best when our existence mirrors, or at least simulates, the one we are still genetically adapted to live. And that is the purpose of exercise. - Mark Rippetoe
