Mr. Iron Addict,

I am frustrated in my attempts to lose bodyfat, I am 5'11 247 lbs and have been dieting for the longest while. I have made progress, but it looks like I have lost a lot of muscle. I do high intensity cardio 6 days a week and eat 1800 calories a day. What do you suggest.

I get these types of emails and PM's all the time. PISSES ME OFF. Why the hell would a 250 lb guy be eating 1800 calories a day. Invariably when I get these guys to check morning body temp they are 94-95 degrees, and I have seen 93!!!!!! They have TOTALLY screwed their thyroids because they are eating starvation diets trying to knock down the bodyfat overnight. I am going to keep pounding this into peoples heads until more people start to "get it".

Peoples first thought when attempting to lose body fat is to stop eating. Most people are just not eating enough, or eat way to much in their 1 or 2 meals they have for the day.

yeah that happens all the time. I lose so much more weight the more I eat. Aslong as it's clean food that is

IAJust for the heck of it, how many calories would you suggest a person of that size eats per day. 2800-3000 would be my guess keeping protein very high. Am I close?

To loose weight, I'm thinking around the 4500 cal mark.

Strange. Ive dropped 65 pounds doing 2000 cal's a day. I started 6'3 305lbs. I did weights 4 days a week with 20min cardio and 1 day 30min cardio per week. did pretty good. Kinda stuck now though :) cant get to the gym as often because of work now.

I was doing the same thing for a long time--went from 240 to 175 inside a year, with 40-50 of those pounds within 3-4 months. I probably lost a good 10-15 pounds of muscle, if not more.

Slow and easy wins the the fat loss race. Patience is certainly a virtue all dieters must have. Keeping confidence up over the long haul is of utmost importance.

Best,
Dave

What's the neighborhood for a guy trying to lose weight and he weighs 190? I made my diet for an average of 2500kcal /day.

There isn't one. I have 200 lb lifters that diet at 2300, and guys the same weight that diet at 4300. YOUR metabolism is the one you need to set kcals for. The only way to know is to log your diet and adjust as needed.

Hey guys, can you tell me what some good foods for the TCD diet fat/protein meals are? I can't think of anything decently healthy besides eggs and steak.

I would search, but it looks like the link is broken.

Thanks,

Dusty

IA...I know the bigger you get, the hotter you get...but I dont ALWAYS see that to be the case with some guys that lift, they dont sweat a whole lot...Me on the other hand, sweat ALOT and am constantly hott, ESPECIALLY night times around my high protein/fat meals...this is a good sign I am taking it correct???

I bust my ass and barely sweat...I've been reading Metabolic Advantage by John Berardi and I think my problem is my body is too acidic which can cause a sluggish metabolism. I need to balance out the pH with some base foods. At the moment I mainly eat acidic foods so I've added in a ton of Spinach and some raisins.

I sweat like crazy any time it's remotely hot, or with even slight exercise. Have always done this -- never been above about 12% BF. Could by hyperthyroidism, but I don't have related symptoms (and my mom is HYPOthyroid-- umm --ic). IA is referring to your 1st-thing-in-the-morning-roll-over-and-put-the-thermometer-in-your-mouth temperature. You can use that to gauge your thyroid function somewhat accurately, as your temperature will rise and fall throughout the day. If it's low, there are a few things you can do, like trying a few higher carb/cal days to restore leptin levels, taking kelp caps for iodine... I think guggelsterones are supposed to help, too but don't quote me on that

What should ones Basal Body Temp be? I've found ranges of 97.8 - 98.2 stated before

Now my question what if someone around 250 (as you have stated) is dieting around 1800 cals (as you previously stated) however their temperature remains in the 96-97 degree range?

Has that ever happened? Have you ever put someone on a diet and used BBT as a guage for calories? Just curious.

I did a search using the term "Assessing Thyroid Function with basal temperature" Here are a few things I found,

Basal Body Temperatures (BBT) - Factors Beyond the Thyroid

In the early 1980's Broda Barnes, M.D. wrote a book titled "Hypothyroidism: The Unsuspected Illness." Dr. Barnes advocated the use of axillary (armpit) basal body temperature as an indication of hypothyroidism. The premise is simple: If your 5 day average basal body temperature is below 97.6 then you are suffering with low thyroid function. The basal body temperature reading is a good way to assess low functioning metabolism, it does not allows indicate a primary thyroid problem. Other factors can impact body temperature leading to false diagnosis of hypothyroidism.

Assessing Thyroid Function without Blood Tests

Some physicians say it is more accurate to assess thyroid function by measuring body temperature in the morning before getting out of bed. This method, known as the Barnes Basal Temperature Chart, is believed to be especially useful in the treatment of obesity.

Every morning, as soon as awakening, before getting out of bed, put a thermometer under your tongue and let it remain there for three (3) minutes.

If your under-the-tongue temperature is less than 97.8-98.2 degrees Fahrenheit, you are likely hypothyroid. To get the most accurate results, repeat this test every day for at least 2 weeks. Write down the date, time, and temperature and bring this with you when you go to your weight-loss physician. Chronic morning basal temperature readings below 97.8-98.2 might indicate a need for thyroid hormone replacement.

I am wondering if your your thyroid leaves the state or just runs away to the next town can it be lured back home with good diet, or do you have to file a missing persons report with your Doctor.

From the people I've talked to, I believe that with a good diet and some thyroid aiding supplements your thyroid may decide to come back home. I know in my case my diet lacked any veggies at all for 20 years and also I was eating too few calories so it wasn't like I had everything perfect but my thyroid wasn't functioning. The only symptom that I have found for me is the low morning temp, I have no other symptoms of a low thyroid so I am optimistic that I can get it going again.

So i could go to like KFC or poeyes, and get a chicken breast? Like 35-40 g protein and 8g carbs. Kfcs also has like 3g fiber. Is that ok??

Hot dogs are out? So baloney is prob. out too right?

Use common sense. Does the deep fried KFC chicken fit into your diet well? I doubt it. Unless you have some ridiculous metabolism I'd stay away from it. If you think something isn't okay to eat, it probably isn't. Deli meats shouldn't comprise much, if any, of your protein intake especially crap like baloney. Come on man, just think a little.

i was asking the question regarding a TCD, because fat needs to be really high, i figured that soemthing like KFC would fit in there as long as carbs were low....
