Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson has volunteered to get an RFID electronic chip implant to show the world just how safe the new technology is.

The former secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services in President Bush's first term sees it as a potentially life-saving move because the chip will have details of his medical history should he ever be in an accident.

Thompson will be among the first humans to get the chip. Pets have been routinely chipped at pounds and veterinarians' offices in recent years.

Thompson, who recently joined the board of directors of VeriChip, said he believed the technology was an important and secure means of accessing medical records and other information.

Thompson sees the chip as extremely useful for doctors requiring personal information that will help medical professionals and others provide emergency treatment.

The chips contain a 16-digit identification code that can be scanned at hospitals and then linked to a database that contains users' medical data.

Thompson said he will receive the implant when more hospitals have the scanning technology, which could be "as soon as six months to a year."

FDA approved the chips in October 2004. About 7,000 chips have been sold and about 2,000 have been implanted worldwide, according to Scott Silverman, chairman of Applied Digital, which owns VeriChip.

Two hospitals – Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston – currently are equipped to scan the chips, Silverman said.

Thompson predicted that people eventually will overcome their skepticism about having a chip implanted. The chip "will prevent babies from being picked up by the wrong people in a maternity ward and make sure people in nursing homes don't walk away," he said.

What a load of crap. It'll have details of his medical history? What difference does it make? HE'S DEAD. And even if one were still alive -- hello, stupid, look in his medical file. I have a copy of mine in my office.

Or maybe they might think of just having better security in the maternity wards, or better security in nursing homes.

What a load of bullshit. It’s about control at its finest. I bet the technology already exists to scan at distance. Which means you are under the radar and in the grid at all times. All movement can be tracked and big bro can follow your every move. How convenient to our fascist regime.

This microchip question reminded me of another:

In Ohio our driver's licenses have a magnetic strip across the back. Anybody anywhere no what it contains?

I'm not a felon, DUI'er or anything but if I run a magnet over it will it eff it up?

When they start trying to sell us the EURO for currency then I'll get really scared. The Brits don't want that trash; I don't either.

I have smeared all the windows of my condo with mayonnaise in order to repel the rays that the FBI is sending in to read my thoughts. I suggest you all do the same. I learned this from boxing great Joe Louis. They called him crazy back in the day but I call him a trailblazer.

Good thinking rcs6856....but you talk about getting looked at weird at Wal-mart when you have 3 shopping carts of mayo and enough tinfoil to make hats for us all. I feel safer all ready!

I think it overlooks the power plant. I've left the ceiling window to the bathroom uncovered so the FBI too can enjoy the sounds of Brian evacuating his white-bread compacted bowels.

By the way, Brian has some skank publicist from some band playing on Ozzfest staying over tonight. She'll be in her sleeping bag in your empty room - I'm not kidding. Unless of course she's "approvable" in which case she'll be sleeping on my stained mattress.

I am guessing this could be done on an involuntary basis, through "vaccinations" or something.

That reminds me, I have to get a couple shots for school. Can one insist on watching the meds be drawn into the syringe?

As long as I have the right to bear arms, i can say for certain that this will never happen to me. No gun registration in my state (AZ), either, so it would be hard as hell to take them away.
