View Full Version : My squat technique

This is related to my thread in Q&A (http://www.ironaddicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4550) I'm concerned that my squat technique isn't great, having not done it in 10 years.

Here is a video of me doing squats with no weights. I don't have any weights at home and I'm a little embarassed at taking a camera into my gym (too many chicks and half arsed posers around).

http://www.putfile.com/media.php?n=squat-002

After doing just 9 of those squats without weights (it took a couple of takes) I can now feel the muscles on the right side of my spine - they're tense and a bit sore, right about point B here:

Cheers for any comments

hmmm... it's kinda dark, so i can't see what you're doing too clearly but it looks like you've got it down nicely. keeping that technique with a barbell on your back will be the trick ;)

It's fine...but go deeper.

lots deeper. like all the way down t the bottom of the universe. try and drag your ass on the floor. :D

heres a paralle squat http://ironaddicts.com/video/squatdiagramA.jpg

you aint even close to this. you should be well below parallel at your size.

good luck and keep us posted.

Even further down?! Geez - I thought it was deep enough. It's deeper than almost all the guys I've seen squatting at my gym! Then again it's a bit of a Men's Health gym.... :o

Next session I'll get my arse closer to the floor like you said.

BTW is my upper body leaning too far forward? I get this feeling sometimes that my upper body leans too far forward, putting strain on my lowr back...

Ex - I checked the videos before I started squatting again and before I took the vid but not since. Now that you've drawn the focus to the depth I can see how you're squatting deeper than I am. I didn't notice it as much before. I'll give it a go on my next leg day.

I'll be going light - that's for sure.

Thanks. Yeah. Once is when I was a 242'er. The other was just a 275'er with I think like 780? I can't tell. Or it might just be 700. Not sure.

Once you get your flexibility your weights will go up quickly.

Thank you. Part of the challenge of powerlifting is making it to a meet HEALTHY. I have done it just a couple of times. :( Oh well. I had my chance. I am fine with just healing up and passing on some knowledge. Ex would be too tough to catch as a master anyway. ;)

I've just gotten back from my first squat session after your comments.

I found that like you both said I could go a lot deeper, so I did. I started off light and kept adding until I squatted more than I thought I'd be able to. Man it felt great too.

Just one thing - If I walk as stiff as an 80 year old cowboy tomorrow I'm blaming you Ex and you too Future :D
