View Full Version : The Road to a Long Recovery

Last winter I was diagonised with FAI. A inherited condition where the femurs are misshaped and causes a whole slou of problems. I had hip pain for years, limited flexibility, and it turns out arthrisis, damaged cartilege, toren labrums, and disinigrating joints in both hips. My whole life I played competitive sports and recently picked up powerlifting with the ambition of college football. Unfortunatly, all these sports wreched havic on my hips.

On july 20th I had major hip surgery. I had my femur dislocated, reshaped, my hipsocket reshaped, all of my cartilage in my hip taken out, a frature repaired, and two screws put into my right hip. I came away with a 13 inch scar.

Ever since last March when I learned of my hip condition, I stopped squatting and deadlifting due to the doctors begging. He had told me numerous times, "no squatting, legpress, or lunges...ever."

With one hip done, the other is next. then in 5-10 yeasr hip replacements until those wear out, and more hip replacements.

Right now I am still rehabbing my hip. I;m working out 15 times a week trying to get my strength back in my right leg. Since I am a junior in high school, I asked my surgon about playing football next year and he said its a posibility. It just depends on a) how my right hip heals and b) how damaged my left hip is and if it can withstand one more season.

I have been doing a lot of upper body sinec surgery. I just completed Smolov Jr. for bench and Ive been squatting lightly and slowly increasing the weight. I'm at 75x3x5 right now. Also, yesterday I tried deadlifting for the first time since surgery and it felt alright, so ill start incorporating that into my routine.

Today I am hovering around 215-220. Befoer surgery I was 200 and I droopped down to 180 after surgery. I want to get up to 230-240 for football next year. This journal will be used for my therapy, lifting, running, nutritional logs, powerlifting competetions hopefully in the future, and what ever other sports arises. Strap in and hold on because it will be one hell of a ride for me!

College_TE

So before surgery my max bench was 225x1. A month ago it was somewhere near 235. In the previous month I ran smolov jr for my bench and have seen great gains. Yesterday I did 225x5, so i'm guessing my max is around 260. I'll be maxing out next week. Also, im trying to come up with a new routine that will get me squatting and DL'ing more often so that I can get back into the grove of things and see how it feels on my hip.

Goals for beginning of football:

Bench: 300 (260ish now)
Squat: 300 (my previous best, 75x3x5 now)
Deadlift: 350 (135x3 now)
Military Press: 185 (150ish maybe)
Pullups: 20 (11 now)
Dips: 30 (15 now)
BB Row: 225x5 (185x5 now)
40: 4.8 (freshmen year it was a 5.4 but I did a lot of work over the summer and got it to a 5.0)
Vertical: 30 (26 last winter)
Weight: 235 (215-220)

It really was. I cant even begin to describe the pain. Just awful. But it's a lot better now. It gets really achy and tingly at times, but it isnt constant anymore. The big concern now is that in surgery they cut my femur free by cutting all the ligimants that attatch it to the hip socket, then reattatched everything. It's critical that I build up my muscles around my femur so that it doesnt move around much because it is very easy to dislocate my hip with the ligaments and all taht still healing

Man, sounds like you've been through a lot.
Admirable that you face your problems the way you do, seems like you got your head on straight :)

Subbed, I wanna see you get that strength back.

And strong bench!!

The funny thing is, two summers ago I had my appendix removed three days before the football season started and It knocked me out of the season, and i lost 20 pounds. every summer it's just a new obsticle but i'm getting close to where I want. I just really need to strengthen my hip. My grades for school came out tooday...4.0 :D

man, crazy situation...

anyways, i see you are doing 3 x 5 for squats... and 3x3 for deadlifts...pretty low rep range.

i'm not quite strength verified to provide advice but i have heard of people doing higher rep movements to help prevent and alleviate joint pains...rep ranges around 12-15 or 20-30 reps

I've always believed in low reps high weight, but right now I dont want a lot of volume. The surgen said never to squat again or it will really damage my hip, so i want to EASE into it very very slowly at the beginning.

blahh more bad news today. I went to the surgen. Damn surgens. Since surgery, my hip has been really tender. Apparently, it's due to the screws. I have a hard time laying on my right side due to this. It also hurts a lot when I get hit there. I brought it up with the surgen and he said the best thing to do is to remove them. that will be the only way I can withstand a tackle on my right side for football. So tomorrow I will be schedualing my third surgery in a year and a half; the second one on my right hip in 6 months.

The surgery will be somewhat easy. I wont get knocked out, so ill have the pleasure of seeing them make two 1-inch insisions and taking a screwdriver and getting the screws out. It's outpatient so ill be home the same day. The surgen said ill just need t take a week off from working out in terms of recovery. Im hoping i can get thesurgery done in feb.

Also, he wants me to get an MRI of my left hip because there is a lot of damage in that too. He wants to look at all the damage in it before i fully decide on football or not, even though the decsion is alreayd made. HE also talked about scoping my left hip to relieve it before football then do the reconstructive surgery after the season, but that will efffect my preperation too much.

He also said im dumb for squatting still.

That doesn't sound too good. Have you talked to a chiro/physiotherapist/ sports medicine doctor to get a second opinion on whether you can squat or not?

Stay healthy man, don't rush anything.

College_TE

I have not. The surgen has been quick to say from the start no leg press, lunges, or squats ever. I did talk to my physical therapist about it and she wasnt in total agreement with him. I also went to an FAI medical forum and asked people there, and most were in favor of squats. I'm just EASING into them very very slowly. And im performing boxsquats about 3-4 inches above paralled. Pussy, I know, I just need to ease into it.

Thank you very very much. I remember last March I went to the surgen on a Tuesday, and that wednesday I was going to max out my squats. I was planning on 300+. It would of marked the first time I ever hit over 300, but I was so depressed by the initial diagnoses that I never went for it and I never squatted after that visit until just recently. I'm really aiming to get back to where I was and finally get that 300 pound squat.

Be patient, I'm sure you'll get there, you seem to have some strong determination!

As much as I am determined to gain my strength back and start to kick ass in squats and deadlifts again, I also realize there is a chance that it may never happen. I have arthritis in both hips, absolutly no cartilege in my right hip, and the bones, joints, ligements, all that good stuff is severly damaged. There is a chance my hips will simply not let me perform to that level in the future. But, as with most things, only time will tell and all I can do now is work and get to the point where I can discover those answers and see how much my body can handle now.

Wow, 1.5 years? That's wild man. Im surprised that based off of your past, I can squat somewhat "fine" right now. In surgery they had to completly dislocate the femur, so they cut it free from the hisocket and lifted the top end out of my body, so it was 100% disattached. So, the muscles and the joints and ligaments of the hipsocket were completly severed, but then stitched back together. Im very sorry to hear about that. And business is crazy! 11 clients to far. I figure if I can get 30 by the spring, which I think is reasonable, that's 20 a lawn, 600 a week, 2400 a month, and with 5 months of mowing, 12,000

Nice squats man! Does it hurt when you do them?

At first it did a little bit, but I think as I'm getting stronger it is becoming more pain-free. Although, sometimes it does bother my right knee. I think when they dislocated my femur in surgery and put it back into my body it shifted the femur where it attaches to the patella. So now, my right knee cap is shifted inward a little bit, which causes some pain. Right after surgery the pain in the knee was horrible, but as I have gotten stronger the pain and stability of the knee has improved dramastically.

Ibuprophin and foam rolling make the biggest difference ever. My weight is now 223-224. I wanted to do some agility work, esp the 20 yard shuttle in preperation for the combine on march 20th, but the room I run in was filled with tables, so I just did 2x2 verticle jumps instead. They felt...lathargic. It seemed like my height was pretty good, but I didnt feel explosive at all. I think I was reaching further than I was last year, but it's really ahrd to remember. Nice Progress on those deads.

Ehh, it's decieving. I think my best dead before surgery was 355, so this is still light weight for me. I just wanna ease into things again

Nice deadlift and bench :) How you feeling, everything's getting better?

I'm starting to get really frustrated with it. Strength wise it's improving nicley, but my athletisism is shit now. 18 months ago I felt like an animal playing sports. I was so quick and explosive that no one could stop me. Then I had my appendix removed, have 6 months of no running go by, then my hip stuff, and 18 months later im starting up again.

I was schedualed to participate in a football combine march 20th so I did some 40 yard dashes and verticle jumps, but my numbers are horrible now. I feel as if I lost all explosivness and all my althletic ability. I decided I want to start playing pickup basketballs to practice my jumping, cuts, and all that stuff so I played my first games tonight. I felt so slow and sluggish. I'm not use to it one but. SOryy about the rant.

But I also discovered something tonight. When I try and jump off my right leg only I have this real sharp, dull achy feeling in my hip for a few seconds when I'm pushing off and landing. It didnt go away tonight. This feeling wasnt there before surgery. It really prevented me from being able to jump 100% off of my right leg. Im thinking it's just something I'll have to live with.

I have migrated out of my basement and into a powerlifting/strongman gym. It's incredible. Only $99 for 5 months, and the trainers give good, free advice. It isnt some bullshit health center. It's all hardcore, underground, and a badass gym all around. All the trainers are pwerlifters and/or strongmen. The gym has tires, sleds, fat bars, chains, bands, chalk, specialty bars, absolutly everything. It has a real old school, no BS only hard work feel to it. I love it there. One guy there benched 800

also today, a little agility and jogging work.

That's a great price for a gym! All the decent gyms around here run at about 700-800 dollars a year.

I feel ya. I Checked out LA Fitness because I figured with all this snow I could use their basketball court for speed work. It was 54/ month, plus a $200 start up fee, which would of totalled to around 850 a year. Plus it's a complete shit gym.

YEsterday waas the first time i actually kicked in about a year and a half. The first field goal I set up at the 15. I go and kick and bam. Shank it and it hits the goal post. I though shoot, dang hip. Second one it was clean as ever, straight down the middle. The craziest part was how far it was. My dad and I couldnt believe it. It felt like the best kick ive ever done. We ended up moving it back for a 50 yarder and we made it with ease, with 5-6 yards to spare. IDk what the heck happened but my leg is better than before. I also hit 4 40 yarders from the hashes. All were a dead shot down the middle and could of been good from 53-54.

Thank's man. I'm absoutely shockjed with it! My right leg is still weak, so i think there's more room for improvement. If I can keep progressing, 60 yard field goal here I come :D Although I'm looking to play TE or DE in college, if I can keep kicking 50 yardres consistantly ill definitely kick too

I have no idea what the standard for a great kick is, but if you say it's good I believe you :D And if your leg is feeling better than before than that is even better!

They say if you can kick around 50+ consistantly, that is D1 level. 55-60+ could possibly be NFL level.

Yesterday, 4/1, I had a minor surgery to remove my two screws from the original hip reconstructive operation. Normally, they just give you some local anestisia and youre out of it for 10 minutes. Im my case, I was too muscular for local (more muscle you go through the more pain it is) so I got a quick dose of general. I woke up and wasn't in too much pain. Got out of surgery at 10, got home at 12. Now I have a limp, and this morning im sore as heck. Im suppose to stay off my feet for a few days and no physical activity for a week.

My hip is coming around now. I can finally run up stairs without thinking about it, and the swelling is going down. I will try and get an upper body workout in this weekend. It will be hard because I started a company and have been working like crazy, ontop of a ton ofs chool work. Ive alreadt made $800. Not too shabby for a 16 year old.
