Just curious what major antioxidants you all are using. I have a few I like, but I am a supp junkie and always willing to try new things.

I'm using:
NAC
GT extract
Turmeric/curcumin (though mostly a cancer preventive)
And things like Vit A, C, etc.

After learning more about proanthocyanidins, I am adding grape seed extract to the mix. Pycnogenol (a pine bark extract) is very similar.

Feel free to list what you are using, including those that enter the mitochondria.

From LifeExtensionFoudnation:

Proanthocyanidins are the main active ingredients in grape seed extract that go after “molecular sharks” otherwise known as free radicals. They make up about 90% of grape seed extract. Various versions are all united by a similar chemical structure and possess powerful antioxidant activity15—20 times stronger than that of vitamin E and 50 times stronger than that of vitamin C.16 The “super-antioxidant” effects are neatly summed up in a study showing that pretreatment with grape seed extract reduces DNA fragmentation in the brain by a whopping 50% and in the liver by 47% after exposure to a strong chemical.12 Proanthocyanidins, along with resveratrol and quercetin, are some of the healthy factors in wine.

All I take is Idebenone (sp?) or the equivalent CoQ10. I'm interested in you Turmeric/curcumin supplementation though.

There is a good bit of empirical information out there on the benefits of curcumin. Here is a link with some good info: http://www.lef.org/protocols/prtcl-027c.shtml#curcumin

Wesley -

Do you use the Liver Detox supp from Now as an everyday antiox? Looks to me as if it's geared towards intermittent use. It does contain some really nice ingredients, though I am not familiar with them all.

Due to the price of CoQ10, Green tea Extract, NAC, and Liver Detox seem like much cheaper alternatives. I may look into buying one of them.

vitacost.com has made q10 affordable. They beat everyone else I have seen by a HUGE margin.

Wow, already found a bottle of 240 capsules (200 mg) for $40, that kills anything else I've found. Thanks a lot!

Coq10, clout, C, occassionaly NOWs liver product, green tea, 'FREE' by nutritox, a greens powder with some anti ox's sometimes, and sometimes a high-end multi with additives.

Yep, they do. I bought Q10 in bulk when IA turned me on this site. Vitacost is also cheaper on their Carlson's Fish oil.

Do you guys dose CoQ10 based upon age? Natural production of it begins to decline not until around age 25 I believe, so I am wondering how beneficial it is for someone before they hit their later 20s. I will see what I can come up with, and if I find anything I will report back here.

If raw cacao counts I have been seeing how I feel with that in my diet. Supposedly has the most concentrated amount of antioxidants of any food, same story with magnesium.

I think so, but the dose can be a lot lower. I do 200 mgs a day.

Interesting fact is that almost all heart attack victims have depleted q10 levels.

I beleive statin blockers that doctors prescribe for cholesterol absolutely destroys CoQ10 production in the body if I remember correctly.

With 3-4 of my meals that day, I eat 3 sticks of raw green onion, and a good chunk of raw diced garlic in my food. In my oninion, very cheap and effective alternatives to antioxident supplements.

Nice, but doesn't get into the mitochondria like q-10, SOD, gluthione, ALA, ideb, etc.

Healthy mito is a key to longevity, easier fat loss, and a more efficient energetic system.

Does NAC get into the mito?

Not directly but it has a high conversion rate to gluthione which does.

For you coQ10 users, you may want to look into ubiquinol. It's a more bioactive form, but I'm not sure exactly how it compares to regular CoQ10, on a dose to dose basis, cost-wise.

I was looking into glutathione products some time back. NAC, ALA, and vitamin C apparently does it the best. I found this product to tickle my fancy, for those of you looking for any good antioxidant supps: <http://www.carlsonlabs.com/p-191-glutathione-booster.aspx> It contains no ACTUAL glutathione, which is apparently not too good for raising levels of glutathione, and alot of GOOD STUFF.

I wonder, though...is there any way to get any of these in decent concentrations from any whole foods (other than Q10 from yogurt, which I cannot eat)?

Not in quantities enough to really do what is needed/wanted.

Most people take nothing of the kind. They also age faster and have health issues that could likely be avoided by treating mito right. Mitochondria is found in every cell of the body and is the energy producing unit of the cell.

What brands are reputable for COQ10 products? Or any supplements?

Been really interested in this lately, researching a lot of the different antioxidants. A lot of vitamins and minerals seem to be natural antioxidants, so good supplementation and diet seems crucial too. But the main ones as far as vitamins/minerals seem to be Vitamin C and E, and I supplement both of them. Other than that, CoQ10. A lot of others seem great, Liver Detox, Grape Seed Extract, Green Tea Extract. But I don't really have the money to get those things at the moment. So it's basically, Vitamin C, E, and CoQ10. I think it's important especially considering I consume a lot of unsaturated fats, especially fish oil.

Grape seed extract is dirt cheap IMO. If you can afford CoQ10, you can afford grape seed. Note that I am not saying grape seed is a replacement for, just that it is similarly inexpensive.

Well your post is what got me interested in it. Did a little research on the Grape Seed Extract and looked on Bulk Nutrition, Now Foods has a 90 day supply (if you take one, if two, then a 45 day supply) for $15. Vitacost has a CoQ10 240 day supply for $40, that's a great price IMO.

Have you found some Grape Seed Extract for cheaper than what I listed. I'm about to go on some other sites and see if I can find any cheaper than what was listed on BN.

http://www.vitacost.com/Source-Naturals-Grape-Seed-Extract-100-mg-120-Capsules

120 days for less than $14. I think 100mg is more than sufficient for GSE. I am not in favor of megadosing certain supps until we know some more about them (there are exceptions here), but that is my general viewpoint - get them in at a level enough to be significant, obtain their benefits, but don't get to pro-oxidant levels. JMO.

Thanks. Vitacost is a great site. They also had another Grape Seed Extract right below that has 120 mg for about a dollar less.

And I just wanted to state, I think IA mentioning the Liver Detox is great, if you don't mind paying $10 a month. I was looking at the Now Foods brand, and it is jam packed with anti-oxidants, milk thistle extract, NAC, methionine, glutathione, and various plant/herb extracts all in one package.

NOW ADAM contains CoQ10, do you guys still supplement it ontop?
What other online sites do you order from for supplements?

Yes, it only has a little bit in it. It is helpful if you can't afford to take a real dose, but is not enough to get the best benefits from Q10.

It has 5 mg. I take 200 mgs a day. Effective Q10 doses are between 50-400 mgs a day.

Have you guys heard about olive leaf? The stuff is supposed to be extremely potent as an antioxidant. I use this stuff:

http://www.vitacost.com/Barleans-Olive-Leaf-Complex

A bit expensive, but completely worth it and the best extract available I think. Well, everything from Barlean's is extremely high in quality. Here's some cheaper stuff that is good too:
