The Rader Master Bodybuilding
and Weight Gaining System, by Peary Rader

This little booklet was first published in 1946 by Peary Rader. Iron historians will know that Peary was the owner and publisher of IronMan magazine for many decades until he sold it out to the new owners. The original IronMan had a wealth of information that actually worked for people. But it was quickly overshadowed by the Weider's and their Weider princliples of NOT gaining muscle magazines that mostly feature how the genetic freaks on steroids train.

This little book is what popularized the 20 rep squat program. The program that took Peary from a weak guy, to a guy that actually competed in weightlifting.

Pro's
It has routines that actually work for people.
It also goes into detail about what to do if it doesn't work
It has a sample diet that is actually very good for a guys that wants to build muscle--Peary understood even back then you need a lot of food, and a LOT of protein to grow muscle.
Even if you don't want to do a 20 rep squat routine, this book is worthwhile for the historic significance. The current version was redone in 1956 and has AWSOME old black and white photos of BB'ers of the day.
It, like Brawn, will show you a side of bodybuiding most people have never been exposed to.

Con's
20 rep squats are not for everyone.
It is reccomded to do the routine either 3, or 2 times a week, and 2 x a week 20 rep squatting is very brutal. Some people will do better just squatting 1 x a week.
A good deal of the information is dated. Peary discusses the importance of not having excessive sex--whatever that is:D
It is only 48 pages long and will have you wanting more when you are done.

What it is for
This book is a great look back into time, and a book that actually has info that will be helpful for many lifters at the early stage of their lifting careers. This is NOT a routine to be used for years on end. But a great way to add a lot of muscle to your frame if traditional methods have not worked for you.

It is still available here:

I have had my copy since '93:D

Once work picks up, the stuff in this section will be at the top of my reading list.

Sounds like a great read.
