My gym has just got some strongman equipment, and there's a contest in the summer, which i'll compete in to get some experience (it's designed with the weights starting low so everyone who wants to can compete). When lifting a log or a stone, how important is it that my back doesn't round, I can imagen it being impratical trying to keep my back completly straight, especialy as i have very bad hamstring flexablility. Also if i was rounding my back could a belt make it more dangerous by making the vertibrae just above the belt bend a lot more?

Rounding of the back will happen when lifting stones and also with the log depending on how you clean it. The upper back will have round just watch out for the lower lumbar region.

Most people don't feel confertable wearing a belt for stones.

Everyone I have seen load stones has a rounded back. Like TAK said it is more important that the lower back stay straight.
