I have quite a lot of serious mass (probably around 16 lbs of the stuff left). When do you guys advocate taking a weight gainer shake?

If they are low fat ones, take them post workout as they are usually just protein and tons of sugar. You could make your own for cheaper, most likely. Whey + Dextrose.

Other than that, there aren't too many optimal uses.

They are more aptly described as "waist gainers". As Brent mentioned they can be fine PWO. They will just make you fat consumed other times during the day. What you really need is more protein, and more calories, but the carbs/fats should be coming from food, not sugar, and THAT is what the weight gainers have, regardless if they say dextrose, malto-dextrin, sucrose, or fructose, those are all simple sugars.

Unfortunately this is what I kind of thought before I asked the question. The carb to protein ratio is far too high and when I took the weight gainer I seemed to put on extra fat. I guess I can chuck the 24 lbs of weight gainer I bought as a horrible investment, but can these calories still be used to replace a meal or something to fill calories when in a bind?

Once I run out of whey, I suppose I will use the "waist gainer" as a pwo drink.

Thanks guys

my super lean/skinny friend has been using a weight gainer (because this kid is really small) and his waist has gotten bigger. Its funny though cause it looks like a HGH belly and I always tell him to lay off the growth hormone

Don't use it to sub meals, nothing can replace a whole meal really. If you are REALLY in a bind, sure, it's better than starving for long periods of time, but use sparingly, except pwo.
