SO i injured my shoulders doing squats. I think it was because i placed my hands close to my shoulders because i thought it would stabilize the bar and keep my back tight. Little did i know when i woke up i have a sharp pain around my front or rotator cuff.

Placing your hands close is fine if you have decent shoulder flexibility......if not then you end up like you did.
I've tried a closer grip and it is extremely uncomfortable for me, that's why I stick to a wide grip (right at the collars)
Rest it for a while and you'll likely be fine. If it still hurts after a week or so I'd go see a physio or something.

this is pretty common actually...
this is why most pl'ers use such a wide hand position

I always need to do a pretty thorough stretch session for my chest and shoulders on squat day. You have to find a setup that works well for you, both in stabilizing the bar where it feels best, and in avoiding unnecessary injury.
