View Full Version : Ketosis after carb up?

Hey everyone. I did my carb up yesterday and today I still tested positive on my ketostix. That seems good to me, but I don't know if there's anything I could tell from this.

Does the body go back to ketosis that fast normally? Should I eat more carbs on the carb up day?

I'm not really worried about this, I just assumed I'd get kicked out of ketosis for a day or two and was curious if it meant anything at all.

How long was the carb-up, how many carbs were consumed, how long after the carb-up was over did the ketostix show ketosys?

I took in a few carbs Friday night. Just a little broccoli and cheese sauce. Saturday, I minimalized my calories because I knew I was going to have a few drinks that night. I normally try to shoot for 23-2500kcal. This is the breakdown Sat. minus alcohol and diet soda.

1868/ 33/ 212/ 185 - kcal/fat/carb/protein

I tested positive on ketostix around mid-day on Sunday.

Of course you are still in Ketosis. A carb up is usually a 18-48 hour affair with anywhere from 150-500+ grams of carbs consumed before restaring a no-carb cycle.

Sure you know what you are doing? Seems like you would if you know enough to use the ketostix.

I was within the 150-500g of carbs you suggest. Granted, on the low side. Is it necessary to push myself out of ketosis? My intuition says that the best possible scenario would to take in as many carbs as possible while just barely staying in ketosis. Dunno if that's right.

NO, that's why I'm here and ask so many questions. They probably seem pretty simplistic to people who have done it for years, but I can only absorb so much info that I read. Some things get left out.

Dont worry bro I still have to ask questions too. I think if you look around you will find the majority of your answers without having to ask though.

So why are you going through all of this? Weight loss, competition?

I have for the most part. Sometimes, I'd rather just ask than wade through posts for an hour or so. I'm not against reading, trust me I read for at least an hour a day on this stuff. I just forget some things, not to mention where I read them in the first place.

lol, dude, I'm so far from any sort of competition it's ridiculous. Nah, seriously though, I just want to shed enough fat and gain enough muscle to look good with my shirt off. Losing 20-30 lbs of fat and gaining around 20 lbs of muscle would probably more than satisfy me. Right now, I'm more worried about losing fat.

A low carb/no carb diet while good for awhile will eventually casue you to crack.
If loosing weight is your main goal, and it sounds like it is I would stick to a timed carb diet and do your cardi in the morning if possible.
I prefer lifting first then jumping on the bike after, it just makes more sense.

When everything is working well you should be loosing 2-3 lbs of fat a week. Any more than that and you are eating muscle.
You must eat to loose!!

I'm not in full keto diet mode, but nor am I doing a full TCD. Basically the only difference b/w what I'm doing and the TCD is that I don't eat a small 40/30/30 meal after a workout. I do take in some quick carbs as soon as I get home from the gym, followed up by some whey. I do cardio in the mornings as long as it's not leg days. I don't have much left for a bike after squats and dead lifts.

If I feel like I can't stick to my diet, I'll probably add more carbs like the TCD, but so far (and I haven't been on it long) I've been ok. I don't think I need to add carbs at this point either since my energy levels seem fine in the gym so far.

It only takes about 20 grams of carbs to bump you out of ketosis for a couple of hours. Do 150+ and liver will get some glycogen likely and the it will take at least 8 hours or so to get back into full blown ketosis.

You don't need ketosis for effective fat loss. That is not saying it doesn't work well--it does. But there are much easier saner methods to go about it.

I would just start on a low carb, carb cutoff diet. The next step IF needed would be a TCD, and my last option would be a keto. But, they all work.

And to answer your question, no, you don't want to be in ketosis when refeeding. You want all that slin hitting the very sensitive from no carb receptors filling you up!
